Tips & Tricks Listening TOEFL Test

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a standardized test to measure the English language ability of non-native speakers wishing to enroll in English-speaking universities. The test is accepted by many English-speaking academic and professional institutions. TOEFL is one of the two major English-language tests in the world, the other being the IELTS.


In TOEFL Test, there are divided by 4 categories to measure english skill. Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. In this case. The author trying to give a Tips & Tricks in one of those categories such as Listening test.

This category divided into 3 question parts. Part A, Part B, and Part C

Listening Part A
Directions – In Part A, you will hear short conversations between two speakers. At the end of each conversation a third voice will ask a question about what was said. The question will be spoken just one time. After your hear a conversation and the question about it, read the four possible answers and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard. Then, on your answer sheet, find the number of the problem and mark your answer.
Tips: In this part, make sure to focus and listen carefully on the second speaker because the answer or hints question belong there. So, you shouldn't remember the entire conversation. Just focusing on the second speaker.  
Example

Woman: Lui, how did your football team do last season?  
Lui: We won three, lost five, and tied twice.
Narrator: How many games does the man say his team tied?

A. 5
B. 3
C. 2
D. 8

Answer: C (because as a second speaker mention his team tied twice, twice means two times his team tied. So, the correct one is 'two')

A: Do you know what happened to Sally?
B: She couldn't find the classroom until after the class had begun.

Narrator: What does the man say happened to Sally?

A. She went to the wrong class
B. She was late for class because she got lost
C. She missed the class
D. She had trouble finding the class, but she arrived on time.

Answer: B ("she couldn't find the classroom" so that mean she got lost or had trouble finding in class. But, in the last sentence he said "until after the class had begun". This implied Sally hasn't come yet while the class began because she got lost.)

Listening Part B

Directions – In Part B, you will hear longer conversation. After each conversation, you will be asked some questions. The conversation and question will be spoken just one time. They will not be written out for you, so you will have to listen carefully in order to understand and remember what the speaker says. When you hear a question, read the four possible answer in your test book and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard. Then, on your answer sheet, find the number of the problem and fill in the space that corresponds to the letter of the answer you have choosen.

Tips: Read the answer first to predict which theme that the conversation goes to, you must know the topic of the conversation, listen carefully regarding the place, time, what, and who is being talked about, and the question always use the format 5W+1H

Woman: I have only two bottles of wine.
Man: What else did you buy?
Woman: A couple of festive costume, books and native arts and craft.

Woman: About $300.
Man: Please open the small suitcase for me. Okay, get this card to the official at the red desk.

Listening Part C

They will not be written out for you, so you will have to listen carefully in order to understand and remember what the speaker says. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers in your test book and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard. Then, on your answer sheet, find the number of the problem and fill in the space that corresponds to the letter of the answer you have choosen.

Tips: To answer the question Part C, you must listen to all the dialogue lines. Usually there will be three to seven questions from one story presented.
When the narrator read the instructions regarding part C question, we can read the provided answer below. Then try to memorize and estimate the keywords that will be spoken by the speaker.
Focus on the first sentence, usually enough questions about the topic of the story. Also focus on questions about 5W+1H (what, who, when, where, why and how)
